Merlin Bird ID App from Cornell

Bird watching has undergone it’s own information revolution with new bird watching apps. The field books are not being replaced so much as being augmented by smart technology. One of the best bird watching apps on the market is the Merlin Bird ID App from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. My guest today is Jessie Barry from Cornell to talk about the app; how it works and how it is also getting a lot of newcomers into birding.

There's An App for That - Migratory Birds in Calgary

Yes, it’s still winter, but that will change. Today on the Wild Bird Watcher, I talk with the president of Nature Calgary and Chairman of the Calgary Bird Study Group, Andrew Hart about Calgary migratory birds and bird watching Apps. In the Field with Birds Calgary

Birds Calgary is a website and Blog devoted to wild bird watching in Calgary and Southern Alberta. It's a great place to go to find out where some of the best bird watching sites are in our area. There is also interesting stories and information to help you in your quest for birds. They also have some amazing photos to look at. One of the contributors for Birds Calgary is Dan Arndt. I talk with Dan about the site and his experiences birding.

The National Bird Project with Canadian Geographic

The hunt is on to name Canada's national bird. Canadian Geographic is heading up the National Bird Project where you get to have input and vote for your favorite online. Front runners in the voting are the Loon and the Snowy Owl. Because the National Bird Project is open to the public, they have even had a couple of votes for a certain bird from a popular kids program.

Bring on the Bats

Backyard birding is increasing in popularity and along with that we are also seeing an upswing in backyard bat colony or Bat House installments. The bats are there anyway and they are devouring the insects that are trying to get at you. Kris from the Wild Bird Store talks about bats and bat houses.
